Supported and Customized Employment Guide

The Vocational Rehabilitation Technical Assistance Center for Quality Employment (VRTAC-QE); Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), and Griffin-Hammis Associates, and Utah State University (USU) partnered to develop a guide for rehabilitation professionals on supported and customized employment. This new Supported and Customized Employment Side by Side Referral Decision Guide can help in determining how to choose between these two services. Information is provided on:

  • Definitions for supported and customized employment
  • Descriptions of who it was designed for and defining features of each approach
  • Steps to determine who may benefit from supported or customized employment
  • A chart outlining how the employment planning process works within each service
  • Key differences in job development for SE and CE
  • A referral decision-making flow chart .

New Journal Articles on Customized Employment

Customized employment (CE) is a highly relevant but underused strategy for individuals with significant disabilities. It is important to examine how CE has been utilized in State Vocational Rehabilitation Agencies (SVRAs). SVRAs and providers could consider these findings to refine and improve their service delivery and policies/procedures particularly for customized employment.
